"This rod throws a line as flat as a billiard table with a loop you can throw through a screen door. I would certainly rate this rod as one of the very best eight weight rods I have ever cast..." Lefty Kreh.
"The TiCr X 8-weight
is hands
down one of my all time favorite rods. I have tested this rod for
two seasons now from the California delta to the Gulf of Carpentaria,
Australia. It's light, fast, crisp and very powerful, yet it feels
like an 8-weight but with the lifting power of a much heavier rod.
It's definitely a "hot" rod and has found a permanent place in my
arsenal of saltwater fly rods..." Dan Blanton |

|
"I had the pleasure of field testing the
Light Duty Bluewater rod down in Loreto last season. It is one of
the best rods in this category I've ever used and it performed
flawlessly. I'd rate the Light Duty as an 11/12 rod and it's
perfect for those big dorado, medium all-purpose tuna and sailfish.
It has incredible lifting power and it casts very well for a heavy duty
rod..." Dan Blanton |

"TFO tailored these
rods for smooth, accurate and delicate presentations - they roll cast
like a dream and are perfect for small waters where fine tippets and
finesse are required..." Ed Jaworowski

"I was lucky enough to be
able to test drive one of these new
Albright rods during one of
the hottest black skipjack bites in Loreto, Baja history, July
2005. I used the 10-weight and I was hugely impressed with
its castability and its incredibly good lifting power.
This is the perfect rod for those big skippies, false albacore,
dorado and small to medium tuna and all the varieties of
hard-fighting jacks. If you need a powerful 10-weight for
those vertical slugfests, this is a "hot" rod to consider..."

"Sage is offering four switch rods in the Z-Axis family, those being 5110-4, 6110-4, 7110-4 and 8110-4. These are 11 foot, four piece rods that offer a shortened Spey style grip allowing for double handed casting, which I prefer to do if I am wading deep, as well as single hand casting, or "long roll casting with a single haul". Thus the name Switch Rod, a rod built with the idea in mind that the angler can easily cast single handed or switch to using it double handed as the situation allows..." "We went back to the drawing board to create the incredible new Z-Axis Series Fast Action Rods. By improving the entire rod-building process, we created a rod that's significantly lighter, stronger and easier to cast for anglers of all skill levels. The Z-Axis offers an entirely new level of fishability with unprecedented line feel, response and performance. But don't take our word for it-visit a local fly shop and take it for a test spin." "The Redington CPS (Core Performance Series) is Redington's top rod and it's certainly qualified to be called "hot!". This rod reminds me of the Sage XP in all the ways that count. It's light, crisp, fast and is wonderfully finished. It looks and performs like a $600 rod but is priced at under $250. I've used the 9- and 10-weight rods for about a year now and for a variety of species from Rhode to the California delta and on to Baja. They've served me well and I rate them among my favorites..." Dan Blanton |
|
|
"The Redington RS3 Series is a great rod at an even greater price point. I've fished the 9-weight for a variety of species, including delta stripers and it tosses heavy shooting heads and other sinking lines superbly. For the money, this rod is hard to beat..." "Redington's newest and boldest large arbor reel - the Titanium CDL - a true large arbor design with superior features and benefits that you'll love. An oversized cork disk drag offers consistent pressure, smoothness and control and line handling. The Koyo one-way clutch bearing ensures smooth, immediate engagement for quick pick-ups. Made of anodized 6061 bar stock aluminum in an attractive titanium color with durability in mind. A large paddle style handle, a quick-change spool and laser engraved size logo and model indication complete the design. The reel is designed for both fresh and saltwater..." "The Albright Tempest fly reels are absolutely fabulous in every way! It has one of the best-designed quick-change, pop-off spools of any reel on the market, one that won't pop off when you don't want it to. It also has one of the best and easiest left-right hand conversions I've ever seen and the reel handle is just the right size. It has a cork disk drag which will stop anything we need to. It's beautifully finished, smooth as silk and is a pleasure to use. I've been fishing one for about a season now and I couldn't be happier with the Tempest III I have... "This newest of the Tibor family of reels is a must for those who want one of the best fly reels ever designed! More saltwater species world records have been taken using Tibor reels than with any other. "TFO has teamed up with famed Australian reel designer Terry Hayden to create a new reel that is designed to battle the strongest fish in the ocean. Machined from 6061 marine grade aluminum and Type III Hard Anodized, TFO's Hayden reels are built tough for a lifetime of service. Hard Anodization penetrates the base metal becoming an integral part of the material while building up on the surface creating a finish that is harder and more durable than those found on the most expensive reels. Three stainless steel bearings and a large surface area cork drag are combined for smooth start up and positive stopping power. Three sizes cover your big game needs..." www.templeforkflyrods.com |

"Here's another great fly reel at a superb price! The new TFO Large Arbor reels come in three sizes and range in price from $225 to $260. They have a carbon fiber disk drag that will put the hurt on whatever eats your fly..." Dan Blanton |

CAMARILLO, Calif. – A large arbor, narrow spool, disc drag trout reel expressly designed for 5- and 6-weight fly lines is the latest addition to the Abel arsenal of precision-machined products. Called the Super 5 Narrow or S-5N, the reel was in development for about a year in an attempt to determine the precise ratio of narrow spool to large arbor. “Too narrow a spool or too large an arbor (hub) and there’s not enough capacity; it must be ‘just right’ to utilize the advantages inherent in both a narrow spool and large arbor model,” said Abel spokesman Don Swanson. The combination of narrow spool and large arbor will give anglers rapid line retrieval capabilities. Additionally, the line lays on the spool in larger coils. The American-made S-5N is machined from cold finished 6061-T aircraft quality aluminum. “Cold finished aluminum is significantly more expensive than extruded aluminum; but the cold finishing process dramatically increases the molecular density. It creates a stronger metal. Reels are then precision machined (not die cast) on C.N.C. lathes and mills,” said Swanson.
Abel’s newest reel was designed for
Montana- and Alaska-size trout, half-pound steelhead, jack salmon, small
Gulf Coast reds, speckled trout, sea-run cutts, small stripers or blues
and any other fish on a 5- or 6-weight rod in freestone river, spring
creek or lake conditions. The 5.7 ounce reel is fitted with Abel’s 100%
cork disc drag system, is fully anodized and finished for both fresh and
saltwater use. For more information go to

Sea Level FlyFishing’s Tungsten Shooting Heads are manufactured using either Rio’s T-14 or T-8 material.
All heads come with 1" loops on each end. Loops are made
from Gudebrod 50 pound braided mono. |
|
"Offered in six through 10 weight shooting heads (head weights of 450, 500, 550, 600 and 650 grains, respectively), the short head design of these lines work best in confined areas that limit back-casting room - common situations on the water in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and British Columbia in Canada." "The advanced design easily handles a wide variety of sinking tips. Each shooting head line comes standard with four, 15-foot sinking tips with Scientific Anglers’ new Xtra Strength Streamlined Loops. Tips include an AST-formulated floating tip; a Mastery Series Stillwater slow sinking clear tip, a fast-sinking Wet Tip type III and an extra-fast sinking Wet Tip type VI. These heads are best matched with the new Scientific Anglers Spey Monocore shooting line, a .034" diameter, 100-foot intermediate-sink AST coated line." "Scientific Anglers also offers these looped interchangeable tips individually - nine tips in 3 weights (120, 160 and 200 grains) and three sink rates, including a clear Type I (1.5- to 2-ips sink rate), a Type III (3- to 5-ips sink rate), and a Type VI (6- to 8-ips sink rate)." Scientific Anglers Streamer Express Clear Tip
"The first time I tried this line
was last July, 2005, fishing for northern pike with Ken Hanley at
Ganglers Lodge in northern Manitoba. Ken and I both found the line
to be stunning for tossing and fishing large pike streamers and
bucktails in the shallow bays - water ranging in depth from 1 to 5 or 6
feet deep. We fished the 350 on 8- and 9-weight rods and we both
couldn't have been more impressed. Since then we both have found
many applications for the Streamer Express clear Tip..." Dan Blanton |

Scientific Anglers Custom Tip Express "I've personally tried the Custom Tip Express fly line on the delta for striped bass. It is an excellent line in every respect and I know it will become one of the most popular super-fast-sinking integrated shooting heads..." - Dan Blanton |
|
"When you need a shooting line that is tough and nearly tangle-free and will let you cast a big shooting head into the next county, then this is a shooting line for you. It's one of the best and I've fished them hard from the Rhode Island to Australia. They've never let me down..." Dan Blanton |
|
"The new Rio T-14 Custom Outbound line is the fastest sinking of all the Rio lines. It comes with a 35-foot, level head of T14 blended into an intermediate shooting line of .034 diameter. Its total length is 120 feet. This is the perfect line for plying the depths and it has become my go-to California Delta striper line. It shoots like a true shooting head of T-14 but without the hassles of an attaching loop. It is one of the best "integrated heads" I've ever used..." John Sherman

"This new, all-purpose saltwater line for bonefish, striped bass or snook and redfish is based on the Clouser Taper with a quick loading head that will turn over big flies in any wind. This line is made on a braided multifilament core for suppleness with a hard tropical saltwater coating. Ideal for fishing in cooler conditions. This line has welded loops on both ends for easy rigging. It comes in sizes WF6 - WF10, length 100 feet, color coral. For more on Rio lines go to www.rioproducts.com |

Rio DC26 Coldwater Striper Line "The
Rio DC26
Coldwater Striper line is one of my hands down favorites for SF bay and
delta striper fishing. It has a shorter belly and a 10-foot rear
taper which prevents the head from dumping. It's a superb line for
beginners who might have difficulty handling lots of overhang.
It's also a great line for the advanced caster who wants to make long,
effortless casts. This line almost casts itself and is one I offer
my clients who are just getting into this type of fly fishing and have
difficulty dealing with loop-to-loop shooting heads..." Dan Blanton |

|
"This is one of my favorite coated
shooting lines. I prefer this type of shooting line far and above
mono types for most applications. The
Powerflex Core shooting line in .030 intermediate density is one of the best for general all-round
shooting head work both in fresh and saltwater. I even prefer this
one for use with floating heads. They come with Rio's special
welded loops which are the best "factory" loops I've ever used..." Dan

Fiskars' Craft Sheet Metal Scissors "Cutting most of the new
multi-strand, stainless coated wire, like TYger Wire for example, will
quickly dull the best and most expensive cutters. Well take note
of this hot item - Fiskars metal sculpting scissors found in most craft
and art supply stores. These great scissors cost about $15 a pair

Peterson's Stripping Guards
"I've used Peterson's Stripping
Guards for several years and all I can say is that I can't fly fish
without them! They are an absolute must fly-fishing accessory, one
that will prevent line cuts and burns. Using one on your stripping
finger and also on the line winding finger (as when cranking backing and
the line back on the reel) will greatly improve your performance while
at the same time provide a prophylactic against cuts and burns. No
more burns from dry lines or cuts from slicing backing!"... Dan Blanton |

Sungloves are not new. They've been around a few years and were developed and endorsed by both Lefty Kreh and Flip Pallot. "Sun can cause skin cancer, and no one is more aware of that than fishermen and hunters. Even if sunscreen is applied to the hands, it is often rubbed or washed off. Sungloves were developed by us to protect the hands while leaving the fingers totally free to tie knots, thread leader tippets on flies, handle tackle or your gun. Light as a thistle and snug but not tight fitting, this glove never interferes with your outdoor activities." "The thin, but very tough material filters dangerous sun rays. On a hot day, if you dip them in the water, the evaporation from them really cools the hands. When not being used they are small enough to fit easily in a pocket..." Lefty Kreh "I just started using Sungloves
at the urgency of my wife and my dermatologist. "You may only be 62
years old", my wife, Cindy commented, "but your hands look 100..." I
took the hint and started wearing Sungloves. So does Cindy. They're
great for all of the reasons Lefty noted, plus the new Amara Palm
(leather like) gloves help to reduce casting and fish-fighting blisters.
I prefer the Amara Palms. They also help keep your hands cool in summer
and warm in winter. Sungloves are truly a "Hot" item, and I highly
recommend them. Look for them at your local fly fishing shop..." Dan

to prevent blisters from casting. They also provide some warmth on

The Dan Blanton Rigged N' Ready soft rod bag, made from heavy duty Cordura, is intended to provide the angler, particularly the traveler, with a bag that easily allows a fully rigged rod with fly to be inserted inside. The bag does not provide the protection of a hard tube or other hard carrier and was never intended to. It doe's provide protection from sun, dirt, sand, and from tangling. Because the bag is highly visible, accidental breakage of your rod is less likely. The padded reel pouch protects reels from being scratched, dented or contaminated with dirt or sand. Once the angler forms the habit of always breaking down the rod at fishing's end, returning the rigged rod to the bag, chances of damage to the outfit from handling, boat bouncing, or ceiling fans is markedly reduced. Two or more rigged rods can be easily carried with one hand without fear of breakage, or tangling, particularly when walking through dense wooded areas. The D-ring allows the bag to be hung out of the way at day's end, and the clear card or label holder makes it easy to identify what's inside or who owns the bag. The bags also fits easily into most rod holders, or under gunnel braces, or they can just be stowed in a corner of the boat. If dropped overboard, the bag will float, even with a rod inside. When the rod is removed for action, the empty bag is easily stowed out of the way, something that is difficult or impossible to do with a hard rod tube. Guides and boat captains love them. Bush pilots love these bags because they make it so much easier to transport on daily fly-outs. The bag will accommodate, two, three and four piece rods. Always make sure the tip section is pointed toward the reel and allow at least 6-inches of leader beyond the rod tip. Insert the broken down rod all the way into the bag, place fly in last and then adjust the excess rod sock to fit your rod's length using the Velcro strip. The Dan Blanton Rigged `N Ready rod bag can be purchased from the San Jose Fly Shop, Western Sport Shop or directly from Dan Blanton www.danblanton.com/RiggedReadybags.html "Once you discover the Dan
Blanton Rigged N' Ready Rod Bag, you'll find you'll be using it more
than any other. They are a must for the traveling angler, folding flat
and easily carried in your luggage. Even at home, I never take my
regularly used outfits out of their bags, except for cleaning. My rods
are always hanging, Rigged N' Ready - which means I'm several steps
ahead of those who are not, and that equates to no wasted time
in-motion, which means more hook-ups..." Dan Blanton |

"The Forefather to all the VLMDs (vertical line management devices), Pro-Trim's Fly Line Tamer (R), was invented by Carl Anderson of Florida. The first time I saw on in use was on a fly-only long range trip aboard the Royal Star. I was impressed with its performance then and even more so later after getting one of my own. There is more than one manufacturer of this type of line management device and the Fly Line Tamer remains one of the best..." Dan Blanton

"The Boga Grip is one of the greatest devices for light tackle anglers of all persuasion to come down the pike in the last couple of decades. I have them in all three sizes, 15#, 30# and my favorite, the 60#. There are similar devices available today but none compare to the Boga Grip in anyway. "The Lee Haskin
Streamer Box is one of the best designed and functional streamer and
shad fly boxes I have ever used. The slotted foam holds each fly

|
|
|
“We took care of most trout anglers, and even touched some saltwater applications with the initial introduction of the System X fly boxes in 2004, “ said Scientific Anglers’ Del Kauss. “ The reaction and immediate popularity of these fly boxes was really surprising, and the main question was how about a box or insert for nymph fishing. We’ve taken an added step with both a specific waterproof nymph box, and a waterproof box for nymphs and dries for the angler who wants all types of flies in one box.” The System X waterproof nymph box is designed with a foam insert sized for nymphs, plus a section to securely hold split shot and indicators. As with the original System X box, it opens on either side, has a see-through lid, and has a unique, tapered seal and soft rubber gasket to assure a watertight closure. “Moisture can’t get in so your flies stay dry, plus if you do happen to drop it, it will float high and dry,” Kauss said. "THE DRY-TECH MRT FLY BOX - Moisture that becomes trapped inside fly boxes can be damaging to flies. Replacing wet flies or fishing in wet or humid conditions can cause hooks to rust and fly tying materials to weaken. Larger nymphs, dry flies, and streamers that retain greater amounts of water are even more vulnerable to reduced lifespan and performance. The new Dry-Tech MRT fly box uses Moisture Reduction Technology (MRT) to eliminate harmful moisture that causes flies to weaken and deteriorate. Moisture from wet flies that generally becomes trapped inside the box is now soaked up continuously by unique absorbent crystals. Wet flies will dry out completely as the moisture from them is drawn out of the box and away from other flies as well. This convenience makes it unnecessary to dry flies separately before replacing them. These crystals maintain a constant dry climate inside and protect flies from dampness & humidity. This reduces the deterioration of hooks, thread, & fly-tying materials and will extend the durability, performance, and the investment in your flies.
Its patent pending design uses environmentally safe,
odorless, non-toxic crystals which absorb and store moisture in a
non-liquid form. These orange crystals gradually turn color as they
reach their maximum absorption capacity. When exhausted, the removable
MRT container can be quickly regenerated in a conventional microwave
oven. When refreshed, their absorption potential and original color are
restored. This process can be repeated for long term service.
Regeneration will typically be required after about every 5-8
individual fishing days. The variance in days is based upon the number,
size, and the water retaining qualities of the flies you use. The
Medium MRT box ( 6.25“x 4.25“x 1.5“) contains flat and slit foam
sections along with a graduated ridge foam bottom. MSRP $39.95. The
Large MRT box ( 8.5”x 4.75”x 1.75” ) employs charcoal slit foam on both
sides for saltwater, steelhead, salmon flies, etc. MSRP $44.95. A
Humidity Indicator Test Strip is included with each box to demonstrate
the effects of the MRT design to the consumer. The box is waterproof &
airtight. Rugged, durable lifetime construction. Made in USA..."

This material comes in a variety of great colors and it doesn't "rat nest" up after a few fish have chewed on it like so many other synthetic fibers do - no take your fly to the dog groomer after every other fish or so. You can get this material from the San Jose Fly Shop and other quality fly fishing shops and materials outlets..." Dan Blanton |

"The Eagle Claw (EC
413), 60 degree bend jig hook has become one of my favorite hooks for
tying any pattern that I want to ride hook point up. All of my
Whistlers, Clousers, crab, shrimp and many others. You can tie
fuller Whistlers and Clousers without using lead eyes and they will ride
perfectly balanced, hook point up. Another benefit this hook
provides is better hooking and holding since the leverage of the 60
degree bend helps to drive the hook in and then keep it there -
much better holding when fishing barbless. Most of the hookups
will be in the top or corner of the mouth and far less will be in the
gills. This is an incredible hook and they aren't very
expensive..."

"The Lowrance M-68C is a great unit. Nothing on the market touches it for the money, definitely maxes out the value for dollar equation. I like it better than other units I've seen and used. If someone dropped mine overboard tomorrow, I'd buy another one without even shopping around!" And Cappar "Check out the Lowrance M68-C. I love mine, and while I might have done it differently if I had more console space, an M68-C is a worthy addition to any boat even as a redundancy. Not expensive either, a great value!" "I can't speak from personal use experience but after looking at Northfork Outdoors' new Coastal Waters Express poonton boats at the ISE show in San Mateo, I have to say I was very impressed with the design and function ability of this boat. If I were thinking of purchasing a poontoon boat for fishing saltwater flats, one that packed up into a 45 pound back pack for easy transport and one that could be paddled or poled and easily stood up on, this is the boat I'd go for..." "Cindy and I had the pleasure of visiting Mike and Sally Trotter's Baranof Wilderness Lodge in August, 2003. This is renowned fly-fishing writer, Ken Hanley's "home water" when it comes to Alaska fishing and Baranof Lodge is where he hosts three weeks of fly fishing clinics every year. This in itself speaks highly of the lodge, its staff and the incredibly diverse fly fishing it offers. We had a wonderful time there and were extremely impressed on all counts. We both feel that Baranof Wilderness Lodge is the near perfect cold-water fly fishing destination, particularly if you want variety and angling diversity. If you don't mind mooching with gear the halibut fishing is an added bonus. We did it all!" Dan Blanton

“Tarpon Cay
Lodge is a new frontier that has just recently been discovered in the
Northern Mexican Yucatan. The lodge is located in the small, remote
fishing village of San Felipe. Tourists are rarely seen here so the
experience is quite refreshing. You will fly to Cancun, where you are
met there and driven ~3 hours on a good paved highway to San Felipe.
This is one of the top destinations in the world today for baby Tarpon
that run 5 to 35 pounds. The other game fish here is the elusive Snook
which is revered by many as a top salt water adversary. Fishing is
conducted in shallow clear water with # 7, 8 and 9 weight outfits and
only floating lines are needed. Although April – August is considered
prime, this area has so many baby Tarpon it can be fished year round.
You can expect most good casters to jump 10 to 30 tarpon in a day. We
have had friends boat as many as 19 in one day!" Bill Kiene.

"This will be our sixth
season on the Stamp River. It is the most exciting of all
Canadian Rivers to fish during September and October. The river
has a truly spectacular fall run of silver (Coho) and king
(Chinook) salmon. Steelhead are also taken, especially in late
season. The remarkable thing about the Stamp is that it is sight
fishing, where anglers cast to constantly passing schools of
salmon. We're talking hot fish here, incredibly strong and fast!
It is great fly fishery, however, spinning gear is also very
effective. Anglers are moved on the stream by jet boat and fish,
two to a guide, fishing either by wading or from the anchored
boat, depending on the water. The lodge offers first class
accommodations and meals. There is an 18 hole golf course
nearby, perfect for an after fishing game..." Bill Hutchinson,

"The reason Fishabout has chosen to use River Plate Anglers is that they offer the most options of any of the peacock bass operators in the Amazon. Jungle fishing is very sensitive to water level. Different drainages are affected differently by rain and draught. River Plate has many camps situated in strategic locations on different tributaries to the Rio Negro and Amazon Rivers allowing them to take advantage of the most optimum conditions available on any particular week. In addition, the camps can be easily moved between trips to the best section of water available on that drainage." "The camps are made up of lightweight floating barges, each tent style bungalow sits on it's own floating platform with a camp toilet, shower and comfortable sleeping quarters. There is a main dining tent where meals are served. The bungalows get daily room service and laundry, the camps run on a 12 volt system that is very efficient. Fishing is done from aluminum flat bottomed boats with outboard motors. Each is equipped with an electric motor for positioning and comfortable seats. The guides are very familiar with fly fishing. Anglers fish 2 per boat. These camps are mostly located at the headwaters of these rivers which offer the most remote access to this wild fishery..." Howard McKinney
