Jim,
Here's my response to Sid down below. It pretty much sums it up.
Hi Sid,
The problem with dishpans and similar shapes is that you have to lift the line into the basket and it's an awkward move that raises hell with the muscles of the forearm. Stan's basket is shaped completely differently than the classic dishpan shape and it has a notch in the front through which you strip the line. You are able to keep your stripping hand low and strip almost straight into the basket without having to lift your hand over the rim. There is nothing else out there like it. I suppose you could make one yourself but it wouldn't come close to Stan's - at $70 bucks its a steal. This basket also collapses for travel.
I've got several dishpan stripping baskets out in my barn that are now collecting dust including the old Orv's model with the cones that Les is talking about. Orvis calls it the Fly Line Holster and this is Stan's design.
Go here for a look:

It also can be packed for travel much easier than a hard dishpan tub, it can still be used in front for double-handed retrieves as apposed to the side position for single-handed retrieves. I just like a one-handed retrieve better and this basket lets you do it more naturally. You have to try one before you can fully realize the vast improvement of Stan's design over conventional dishpan baskets.
