I've heard nothing but praise about Stan's product but have not yet had the pleasure of trying it out. At the prices discussed, it is clearly a better value than making your own!
That said, there is some satisfaction in DIY - I have, experimented with quite a few different home-made designs. All of the suggestions above are good. A third type of material which works well as 'fingers' to separate line and reduce tangling is 200 lb mono. You'll only need a few feet; chop it into 6" or 7" segments and tie a small knot in the base of each to make a plug when you thread it into the basket bottom - the mono is durable and stiff, but flexible. Use the same hot melt technique described above to make holes and clip off the tag end with pliers. Also put a dab of Seamseal or the like on the nub of each plug to secure it in place. Finally, it is hard to have too many drain holes. I've found my best baskets at places like Bed Bath Beyond, Office Depot, and Lowes.
My current favorite homemade basket uses the aforementioned zipties - mine are multi-colored because i'm a snazzy guy ;-). About the minimum sized basket i can get away with in So Cal is exactly 12 inches by 9 inches - a minibasket that accommodates short strips - stays out of the way, especially if I rotate it so it rides of my left hip/upper thigh. If your going for larger game and need to cast more line, and use longer strips, a larger basket is preferred. To attach to self, I use a newer generation bungee with *no metal parts* around the waist and arrange its plastic end hooks so they grab from inside-out - ie, there is no plastic hook end inside the basket to grab my line. Probably more than you wanted to know....but, if you want, i can send you a quick digital shot to your email...after i get back from using the basket this morning. heading out now. yipee.
