I spent close to 16 seasons fishing Key West with Captain Ray Fecher who is one of the top half dozen Big Pine to Key West guides. For many of the latter years we fished together, we used small baitfish patterns almost exclusively. Patterns like the ALF tarpon fly, needle fish variations and mullet patterns. I used a lot of rabbit tail minnow patterns and almost all of them had chartreuse in them. The needle fish pattern was all chartreuse with and orange head and black eyes. None of them were longer than 3-1/2 inches with some exceptions.
If I were to head for the Keys tomorrow, I'd sure have a bunch of small baitfish patterns in addition to some old classics tied smaller than normal. Don't forget crab patterns like the Merkin for tarpon, they work!
I'd also be sure to have a clear tip line in addition to a floater and a full intermediate clear.
