About 5 years ago, he and I were down on beach at New Brighton. We were fishing for halibut and I mentioned that I had never landed a hali on a fly. Well, just like in the movies, Jim hooks a nice fish. I reel in to go stand by him, you know, saying something, like "way to go, Jim!" He gets the fish on the reel and looks at me and hands me his rod like a dad would to a 8 year old boy! I landed the fish and released it. He say, "there you go, you just landed a halibut on the fly!" It was really swell, and I'm laughing as I type this!
Another time on the San Lorenzo, I had been pounding away behind the tennis courts along with 5 other guys. We'd all been there for an entire tide. I was fishing everything in my box. Jim walked down, said hello to a couple of guys, hooked two bright half pounders in about 20 minutes, said goodbye and walked back in his beat up chevy truck. Everyone just scratched their heads, "how'd he do that?"
Jim was a good friend and great guy to fish with. I am going to miss him.
