Hey Dan, sorry if I'm being a nuisance, I'm a tarpon nut as you can well imagine and nothing piques my interest more than discussing tactics, especially fighting tactics, for these monsters. In a prior thread you and Barry had both mentioned really putting the heat on a poon initially. My question is (and this is why I had always set a light drag and supplemented it with my gloved hand), what happens when a tarpon jumps during that first run? Of course you bow to throw slack into the line, but if your drag is pretty heavy, doesn't that increase the chances of the tippet breaking if the tarpon lands on the line or has a good head shake? Doesn't a lighter drag allow for these antics initially, and after that first run, when things settle a little, why isn't that a better point to put the heat on? I'm not trying to be argumentive, just want to see the logic - I'm looking forward to trying your tactics in just a few more weeks.
