I too sharpened tree " hooks" to an acute triangle point - the wider flattened side kept the hook from "kicking out". I sharpen my fish hooks the same way - with the wide side of the triangle facing away from the hook shank. It only takes a couple of strokes from a diamond hook hone. I test my hooks while fishing. If they slide along my thumbnail I give them a 10-second touch up.
