Back in the 1970s fly fishers used mostly large Mustad hooks for Tarpon flies which were very crudely sharpened from the factory, with a very large barb too. My friend Al Perryman made it his mission to have every big time Tarpon fly fisher show him personally how they sharpened their big hooks for Tarpon. Al passed that information along to many of us in the Sacramento area. Then the Japanese hook companies came out with very nice sharp hooks with smaller barbs.
