When using 'J' hooks for species like Northern pike (and others) I've had wonderful success using double wire snag guards, which is what they should be called since they prevent snagging on much more than weeds. I use single-strand stainless wire, about 40- to 60-pound test. Here's a shot of my 'Pike Waker' fitted with a double wire snag guard bent to work almost like sled runners. It hops over everything and you can toss it into the thickest of weeds and sticks, sliding over rocks incredibly well.
They last a long time and break not from fish's teeth but from having to be straightened many times back into position. However, both legs rarely break simultaneously, and you can bend/position the remaining wire leg under the hook point and keep on fishing until it fails. Lefty liked this style of snag guard too.
