I would suggest 25# hard mono. Take a 6" piece, heat it slightly about 1" from one end, bend it 90 degrees, let it cool. Lay the short end on a hard surface and flatten it somewhat with a hammer. Cut this this short end back to about 1/2 inch from the bend,, lay the flattened end on the hook shank, thread wrap, and whip finish. The long, upright end should be a half inch or so in front of the hook point and trimmed to 1/4" - 1/2" above the hook point. It will be lighter and just as successful and durable as a plastic over wire hook guard.
