When Bill Blanton and I fished for peacock bass a few years back we also found that smaller flies, my jig hook flashtail minnow, for example, in size 2/0 and about 4 inches long, worked better than flies longer and fuller. I did catch some fish on those big flies but not as many as we did on smaller flies. My personal best, a 15-pounder was taken on a fairly small fly. I only mention this as to totally agree with you that it pays to have some smaller flies in your fly selection. The fly was Greg Mau's 'Slum Dog' pattern, as he named it.
