I’m pretty much in agreement.

My use of short rods from a boat on the ocean are pretty much limited
to close range stuff. The 40’ example I cited above, when factoring in the 7’ leader and the actual reach of the rod means I will have less than 30’ of line outside the tip. Using Flies that don’t have a lot of resistance when cast. Cast, two or three strips at most then pick up and cast again and shoot 5’ of line. Not enough line to hit the water behind me. A lot off times I’m trying to hit a target less than 30’ from the boat. I just find more accurate with the shorter rod in this specific situation.

95% of the time or more. I’m using a 9 footer from a boat for all the reasons you describe

While I advocate for short rods for some situations I would never choose one as my only rod. When we head out to fish the kelp I will have 4 or 5 9 footers and one shorter rod which comes out of the Rigged and Ready bag about 1 out of 4 trips and is rarely used for more
Than an hour. If headed out farther to sea the short rod stays at home.
