|Happy New Year Henry!|
I am always reluctant to post on Dan’s board so I thought I would just email you the thought behind short rods and the likely reason that TFO (yes) and now GLoomis discontinued them. First, the “not to exceed” 8’ was a BASS competition rule that was eliminated last year. I think they’ll allow up to 10’ now but not positive. Second, the application for a short kayak rod seemed great … long enough to fight a fish around the front of a yak and short enough to be accurate in cover. While they did work great for that, the average fly caster seemed to struggle to get them loaded as back-casts rarely are without some slack. Longer rods do a much better job of making up for less than perfect back casts. Rio did make some short heavy headed lines that made them easier to load but their application was quite limited relative to casting distance and pickup. I don’t know if Sage still makes such rods or not.
You are welcome to share this and I hope you have a great 2019!
