As far as fresh water rods go I also share your opinion that a 9 footer is superior to the shorter rods. Now after that being said I do agree with the other posters that a shorter rod in heavy duty 8 foot length do battle the larger saltwater species more efficient. I use a 8 foot Sage xi3 16 wt for trolling my large Chicken fly in Mexico where I fish for a month. My 2 cents
