You miss my point Mel. Aside from the obvious question of whether the child now or ever might be interested in learning to flyfish, with all its attendant complications, what you are doing is selecting an outfit for him that you will essentially be imposing on him, based on your guess/research that this particular outfit is suitable.Of course he knows nothing about flyfishing-and by picking up and trying gear, as you watch him with the instructor-you will instantly know whether the grip is too large, the rod too long or heavy, the balance with the reel right or wrong.And, if you figure out that a particular rod/reel combo is most suited for him, based on just your research and inquiries-then at least let him try to swing it before you're committed to the purchase--that way if something is wrong, you can adapt the outfit/change the components..etc
