Yes, maybe I'm over estimating the importance of weight and length. Comes from participation in and observation of all sports. Beginning baseball players not using Babe Ruth size bats. Golf pros don't start 5-7 year olds with adult length & weight clubs. Most young kids do not learn to shoot with .300 Weatherby magnums or 12 gauge shotguns and so on... and the same for essentially every sport. Maybe fly casting must be the exception.
No, I don't want any toy setup, but by the same token I don't think big is better in this case otherwise I would be considering starting him with a 12 wt set up.
The Echo Gecko might be a possibility. I'm leaning towards a 7' -8' reasonable quality rod and reel with proper line/leader/fly set up so as he eventually gets the feel of the rods action/movement it will operate as it should. He has no knowledge to help him make any determination as to whether the rod action is "too slow or too fast for me". or "I think this rod will be work better
with a up-sized line..." He just needs a properly set up rod of size that is tailored for his size and skill level.
