|I just got back from a weeks fishing in Aitutaki, Cook Island. I was using my 8 wt Axiom II 8 wt with the Atoll II reel. Hooked into a bone fish that was just off the edge of the flats. It took out the full fly line and around 75 yards of 50lb braid. Had a very light drag, so there wasn't much resistance. Then it came unbuttoned. At first I thought the fly broke off. But the fish straightened out the hook. I was using a Dai Ichi 2546 size 8. The hook had straightened out at the top of the bend. It was 90 degrees to the hook shank. The guide said it was a big fish. These fish are BIG and smart. The group only caught one 12lber in the week. There were more bones in the 5 to 8lb range. |
I also carried a Axiom II 12 wt with the Power III reel loaded with a RIO GT line and 475 yds of 50lb braid for those big GT's. After seeing a few in the channel at One Foot Island, I figured I was way undergunned but I was hoping for a shot. There was one GT that the guide said would go around 65 kilo's. A few more in the 40 to 50 kilo range. My friend got one on the reef that was 50lbs, lost two others that were way bigger. Had a few blue fins trivially in the 40lb range. Needless to say he had a good trip. He said there had to be 50 big GT's on the reef but also a lot of coral.
I'm going to do three trips taking groups of 6 fishermen. This trip is very reasonable. Going to post a report on my FB page.
