Skipjack tuna have their stripes on the belly.

Bonito have them on the back.

That's the biggest difference.

Skipjacks are a tuna, and Bonito are a toothed mackerel, like Spanish, King and Cero mackerels and Wahoo.

People have all kinds of names for all kinds of fish--what a Floridian would call a bonito, we'd call a false albacore or little tunny.

That's why scientists refer to the fish as follows:

Skipjack tuna: katsuwonus pelamis

Atlantic bonito: Sarda sarda
