I won't get into all the AFTMA line weight standards. Things really get confusing trying to match a line using those old standards. They really don't work with modern carbon rods.

From my experience casting and fishing both 8 and 9 weight rods, a 9-weight will cast fine with 28 or 29 feet of T-14. I personally use 28-feet. That length will load the rod just fine and is a bit easier to handle than a 30-foot head. If I'm using T-11 on an 8-weight, I use 30-feet.

Start with 29 feet and if it feels a bit heavy trim to 28-feet. I'm with Bob, shooting heads have long been up-lined by two weights for most casters. RIO Outbound Short lines, for example, are basically shooting heads and are up-lined by 2-1/2 weights.
