Hello Howard,
You will get many answers on this one. AFFTA states that the weight range for a 9wt should be from 230 to 250 grains. If you take this at face value, T-14 should weigh 14 grains per foot. So, 16.4 to 17.85 feet. I am a proponent of loading any of my modern rods at least two weights over the stated rod size, so on the high end an 11 wt. line would put your line length at around 22.71 to 24.42 feet. Your muscle type, physical condition, fly selection, rod selection and casting expertise and several other things will effect how this will work out for you. Bottom Line: Start out with a fly you would say is typical for the fishing you will be doing. Then start with a head longer than you think you might need and cut it back a bit at a time until it "Feels" good to you. What is the most important aspect of setting up a proper weight line is to optimize what is best for you..
