Report from Shinnecock Bay NY

I'm enjoying our usual family stay in Southampton, NY. We've been fishing the flats and cuts in Shinnecock Bay. Stripers have been running from 22 to 26 inches--all healthy specimans. I had one take me into my backing 3 times before I boated him. My nephew and I landed about 10 fish in an hour of fishing. It's some sight fishing, some blind casting depending on the lighting. Either way, it's a hoot to hook hot fish in 2-3 feet of water--they have no choice but to run like crazy.
It's a completely different aquatic environment from the Bay and Delta--clear, shallow water, sandy bottom ;-) For the most part, a fishfinder is unnecessary because you can often see the bottom and the fish. Flies are mostly Glen Mikkelson's epoxy baitfish in yellow, chartreuse, or olive or Clousers in chartreuse and white. I'm also happy to report that Dan's favorite color of Clouser works just fine here. We have our own ancient Boston Whaler here, but boats can be rented, and I see guides working with clients, so that's another option. Coming here before the end on June will ensure minimal boat traffic. Around the 4th it gets pretty crazy on the water.
