That is good fishing,,,, While pike over 40 inches are always welcome,,, I will gladly fish all day to catch the axe handles (32-36" 8- 12 lbers) while the hammer handles keep it interesting and entertaining,,, then when you do get that 40 incher, it's all bonus.

As good as ice out can be, I really prefer the period from 2 - 8 weeks after ice out here in Western Canada. This is when the water is warming into the magical 60's F range and the pike will move into 4-8 feet of water relating to structure and really go on the feed bag as their metabolism revs up to the max.

Walleye on the fly is very possible and practical too at this time as well!

Later on this week we start our annual big pike hunt in Northern Alberta (for two weeks) followed by 10 days in The NWT in July.
