Devils Lake Ice Out Pike Trip

Did something new a few weeks, made the 700 mile drive up to Devils Lake, North Dakota, and fished ice out pike. Ice out was the second week of May. The guide hadn't really done much with fly fishermen, and fly fishing was definitely a novelty. We had cars stopping and people getting out to watch because, in their words, they had never seen anyone cast a fly rod before. But I understood the pike were going to be in 1 to 3 feet of water, and was pretty sure that if the guide could put us on pike, we could get them to eat flies. Turned out to be a great trip! I've always wanted to do a pike trip, but didn't want to pay the big bucks to go to the Artic. My unspoken goal was to land a 40 inch fish, but mostly just hoped for action. Turned out there was an unlimited supply of 3-5 pound pike, you catch a 100 of these if you wanted to target them. In two days managed a handful of better 32-36 inch fish, one 40.5 inch bomber, and a few nice walleyes as well. I think if the water was a little warmer, the walleye on fly fishery would be really viable. Even had some good action on poppers on the pike. Wonderful trip.
