Oklahoma stripers were banging

Got to spend four days last week chasing stripers on the lower Illinois River, which is a tailwater coming from TenKiller Dam. The stripers run up the river in May to use it as a coldwater refuge, and gorge on shad and stocker trout. The trout fishermen hate them, but my flyfishing policy is always this, if there is a fish eating the fish that you are fishing for, I'm fishing for that! Mostly throwing large EP patterns, color didn't matter. Lots of smaller 18-22 inch this year, which is unusual, but caught some bigger ones mixed in, including a 37 inch fish, and several 32-35 inch fish. Also landed a bonus four foot long longnose gar and lost a bunch of other gar because the hook has a hard time finding a purchase. Super fun trip.
