Frank,

I suggest you fly up to Weipa out of Cairns and fish with Alan (Fish) Philliskirk. He runs a 5 star guides service and fishes the flats and just offshore for all the varieties of fly-eating species. I've fished with him 3 times and can vouch for his service, boats, guides and equipment. For some details go to my tackle and tech blog page or the travel blog page and read about fishing the gulf of Carpentaria. It should get you fired up.

A caveat: as in all fishing, especially travel, action and conditions can be great and you can hit it when all is off. I've had two fantastic trips, one good and one when the fishing was tough. It was still great though by any standard.

Here's a link to an article I wrote about it a number of years ago. There are also a couple of more recent trip reports when the catching wasn't as good as we hoped.

Greg Bethune is not running his Mother Ship operation any longer but there is another good operation doing the same trip. It's so far to go to Australia I always did a week on the mother ship and a week fishing out of Weipa with Fish's Fly and Sport Fishing.
