I agree; and another possibility is that modern carbon rods are considerably stiffer than older versions and it takes more line weight to bend them. Actually, I have a few rods that claim to be an 8-weight, for example, but are really a 9 in terms of stiffness and load requirement.

Most any modern rod in my experience can handle up-lining from 2 to even 3 weights. You just need to slow the stroke timing down a bit to allow for the rod flexing farther down. If you have a rod you want to slow down a bit, up-line it...
