You can fish the shoreline around the main island where the hotels are. There are lots of bonefish and a few tarpon cruising that shore, particularly if the glass minnows are schooled up. There are a couple small islands within a couple minute boat ride of the main island and visitors often get a boat ride over to spend the day on those islands. We walked around one and had a few good shots at big permit in an area with some wave action, plus there was a big school of bonefish there (if you like fishing schools). But most of the fishing is on the outer islands and tiny pancake flats which require a boat ride and a guide. The boat driver will usually drop you off with the guide who will wade with you. The driver will cruise the boat along in close proximity and your guide will often signal to him to pick you up if that flat is unproductive. So the answer is there is a little DIY action but not a lot.
