That's pretty much what I did on my trip Glenn. Flies in zip lock bags - no fly boxes. The weight issue was a challenge I it's amazing how a lot of little things can add up to pounds...

I hate combing out flies... but I did take a small comb but the Flash `N Slinky mixed with feathers and bucktail on my flies didn't snarl much and caught plenty of fish.

One thing that works great and doesn't add up to too much weight is a RIO Head Case which is designed for shooting heads but holds full fly lines and flies superbly. I've used it on several trips and it hold a ton of flies and doesn't weight that much. I packed my spare fly lines and flies in one for my LA Marsh trip and it worked spectacularly. I now have a couple of them for flies and one for lines. You can get extra enveloped but it comes with 6 or 8 I believe.

Here is a couple of photos of the RIO Head Case.
