Hello Dan,
Being in Green Bay has provided me with too much time on my hands. SO... As you indicated, the major amount of nitrates introduced into the Delta system is by "Non Point Source" contributors like farmers. Fertilizers/Manure are the culprits. Phosphates which were in detergents were banned many years ago. Dawn contains, biodegradable surfactants, which in concentration can reduce the slime on fish which can expose them to skin problems and in some cases reproductive challenges. If you would like to experience what,"Point Source", contribution is, drive North up Bishop Cut towards White's Slough towards the discharge of the Lodi Waste Water facility. Most of the time in the Summer plant growth makes it very difficult to move around without over heating your engine and boy I have not found many fish in that area...
