I agree with you, Greg. As a person with a scientific background I appreciate the scientific approach and rigor of this shootout - very well planned and executed. Very detailed report. That said, the testing is only as good as the goals, design, and execution of the protocol. This testing protocol is specifically designed to test how the rod will work for bone fishing and similar applications. It doesn't test how well these rods will cast a 375 gain T-14 shooting head with a 5 inch Clouser fishing for stripers. So, like you, I end up with a lot of questions and I'm not sure it's helpful for choosing a good rod for striper fishing. Also, in the pictures, it looked like the casting was done on a lawn rather than a casting pond, so the influence of water loading/fluid dynamics were eliminated from the process. In the end, the proof is in the pudding and you need to cast these rods with the setup that you plan to use on the water (rather than a lawn). I think the shootout results can be helpful identifying a short list of candidate rods to investigate further.
