The three essential elements in a fly cast are the line, the rod, and the angler. Changing any one of these alters the success of the fly cast. A rod may function well for one fly caster with one weight, type, taper, and flexibility of line but cast like a dog with another line or another fly caster. The rod is not the sole factor in casting success, no matter what advertisers try to pound into our heads.
