|I have no idea why I checked Dan's board tonight, I imagine some fly spirit emerged from the ocean as I took a walk along the beach tonight. I read all the Lefty stories and will chime in with a huge thank you.|
I was twenty-five years old when I decided to get into outdoor writing and the online media business. I managed to track down a local writer and fisherman, Keith Walters, just outside Easton, MD where I lived at the time. He said, you have to join the Mason Dixon Outdoor Writers Association, all the top writers are there, I'll sponsor you.
I went to the very next yearly meeting and sure enough I was lucky enough to meet Lefty and was lucky enough to have him give a few seminars over the two or three days. I still to this day have the notes and to this day use some of the tips he gave on how to line up a shot. I remember saying to myself, "Am I really here with the guy who I would read in the Outdoor Section of the Baltimore Sun?
I got into the online media game early and over the many years Lefty was nothing but helpful. I gave one of my good friends a birthday present of private casting lesson with Lefty. Of course I accompanied my friend :-) Lefty was kind enough to have come into his house, tell some fishing stories, show us some amazing pictures and then hit the local pond down the road from his house where Tom and I learned more about fly casting in a few short hours then we had in the past few years trying to figure out how to cast. We went to lunch, Lefty told some fishing stories, got in a few good jokes and we had some fun. I remember it like it was yesterday.
I was lucky to grow up in Maryland around the Chesapeake where Lefty would always return after all his adventures. I was lucky though to attend one of his milestone birthday parties at the Boatyard Bar and Grill where in Lefty style he gave us gifts.
Seventeen years ago, I just looked it up, an angler friend, martin James, from England who had a well known fly fishing show, was coming over the pond to fish the Susquehanna Flats with me. His dream was to meet and interview Lefty for an episode of his show. I remember calling Lefty and asking if he would do it. He did not hesitate. Lefty spent the good part of the day with us and as the interview concluded proceeded to ask Martin and I if we had any of his books. Come on, right?! I said I had a few, but not his Lefty Little Library which I had seen on his shelf and did not know existed. He proceeded to give Martin and I a whole set. Needless to say I read, read read and read again all of them through the years.
More memories on Tie Fests and such come to mind which all bring a warm smile.
Thank you for all that you have given to all of us and the sport. Your generosity and authentic passion comes though in every smile and cast you make.
Thank you for all the help over the many years, lord knows I needed it with writing, photography and most certainly my casting. There is a little bit of you in every cast I made.
Thank you and tight lines,
