I forgot to mention the Gurgler. The absolute best day I ever had back in the 90s was on a white 2/0 Gurgler and it didn't make that much noise but it spit a lot of water out in front of it which is what a Gurgler is supposed to do. I landed nearly 20 big, double digit stripers from one school that was ravaging thread fin shad. Others working that same school with another top water fly couldn't get bit. Doug Lovell and Leo Siren actually boarded my skiff and ravaged my fly box to get a couple of those Gurglers. They started catching them to. I know a lot of others who have done well on Gurglers to.
I think it would probably pay to have a few of the top best surface flies for our stripers, particularly if they are keying on a certain type and size of bait.
