Enjoyed another great week of fishing Ontario's Eagle Lake. The lake is about a 3 hour drive from International Falls, MN, and is ~80,000 acres of fly fishing paradise. I'm generally the only fly rod I see on the lake and you can get 4 (arguably 5 if you try to target lake trout really early) species of game fish there - Pike, Smallmouth, Walleye, and Musky. All at tremendous sizes, with a world record Musky very likely swimming somewhere in Eagle.
This year we got smallies to ~5lbs (average one was 4 to 4.5 lbs, all hard fighters), Walleyes to 25 inches, Pike to 39 inches, and several Musky, including one 43 inch fish I caught on a 5wt while looking for bass. Enticed a lazy follow, lost the fish in the low light (just before sunset) but fired out one cast in its general direction and was hooked up almost immediately. That was a thriller. Using average girth and various calculators, she probably weighed around 30lbs (I don't hold the big esox vertically for weighing). Turning her constantly with the 5wt shortened the fight considerably and she was on board for a quick photo within 6 or 7 minutes.
The Pike were fun, as usual, walleye here and there (I missed a strike from what must have been a 30"+ walleye), and sightfishing for bass - while not as good as past years, was excellent on the one or two days we had good conditions...
All in all between the fishing, the scenery, the remoteness...an awesome way to spend a week. I'm convinced most of these fish have never seen a fly - they gobble them up with abandon. Hope you enjoy the pics...
