We were 50 miles to the south, but the rules should be the same. Sinking and intermediate line for tarpon. Floating line for permit in the 10 wt Rio Redfish line worked for me last April. It turned over crab patterns flawlessly in the wind to targeted permit. Bauer crab in tan (1st choice) or olive for permit. Don't bother with any other patterns. Went shorter this year with the leaders and they seemed to work better. Got the permit to eat, so was happy with the experience. Test your crabs to make certain they land properly if you are tying your own. Smaller is better. Had an 8 wt along for jacks and other reef species. Small chartreuse and white closers did the trick while the guide poled looking for permit. The jacks and an occasional barracuda kept us in the game while on the hunt for permit.

flyfishsaltwaters.com had a recipe and instructions for the Bauer crab, but when they shutdown, so did the website.
