No technology (yet) to keep your boat a certain distance from shore. Some trolling motors such the I-Pilot will run a pre-set course that you have previously run and saved.

Regarding your earlier side image question. I was a Sheriff Marine Officer for 18 years. For 10 years I operated true side scan sonar for underwater search and recovery. I supplemented that with a Humminbird 997si side image unit. If an object is on the bottom you can get an identifiable image, such as a sunken car or boat. If an object is suspended, like a fish, you will get a small dot with a line behind it. The line is referred to as a shadow. With practice it can help.
