I've traveled all over the world fishing and I've used those rod tubes dozens of times. I don't hand-carry them as I said - I pack them in my luggage.. It's not an issue of cost, but rather weight. TSA agents have emptied my bags before after an X-ray and they open the tubes find rods and put them back. Sorry, you're over-reacting. I know of no one who has had a problem with such home-made rod tubes.

Folks still hand-carry home-made PVC tubes that look like rocket launchers. They are often checked as sport luggage and unless lost, they get through alright.

Your issue is a non-issue and the least of my worries when flying to a fishing destination, home or abroad.

A point about using name-brand rod carriers - yes, they look like rod carriers and are then identified as something worth stealing...
