Lyle,

I am an avid angler and a native Floridian. There are a number of fish that could make the list that time of the year. In salt, redfish, snook along the west coast, trout and more.

The concern is weather. January is unlike the typical summer weather patterns which tend to be more stable. Obviously, hurricane season is the exception. Winter cold fronts and strong winds make this time of year very unpredictable.

Perhaps you should make the trip with less emphasis on fishing and more about taking in the Florida experience. For example, a trip to the Everglades or southwest side of the state can be very interesting and enjoyable. If you happen to hit during a time when fishing is good, then you are in areas where this might be productive. If the weather stinks, there is still plenty to enjoy.
