I am thrilled to hear of your top water exploits. The anticipation and excitement that top water offers is nearly unbearable at times. I will guarantee, with as much as you fish, you will be bringing a total pig to hand. Know that it is just a matter of time. It WILL happen for you.
The sort of experience you seem to have regularly is what pressed me to figure out the pole dancer and get it to market. It is this type of post that makes it all worth while. It is certainly not the money. Any signature fly tier outside of John Barr, Mike Mercer and a few others can attest to the fact that we don't do it for the money. With the cost of the molds and the hundreds of hours of tying and testing, I might be up to 8 cents an hour now.
I am glad that you have mastered throwing the 5/0 pole dancer as it does swim the best of the group. It has more weight and therefore can slide the farthest. I have completed and Umpqua does have an intermediate size between the 1/0 and the 5/0. It will go on a 3/0 Gamakatsu 5320 spinner bait hook and it throws considerably easier than the 5/0 yet fishes big also. I was also out on Saturday evening fishing the 3/0 and caught some top water fish as well. Nothing like what you have managed to get into but some schoolies and one nice 5 lb largemouth. I am hopeful that the samples for the 3/0 will be done soon and that it can get into production as it throws like a size 14 Adams compared to the 5/0. I was able to throw the entire 11 wt OBS to my backing with my 9 wt Sage XI3. It is awesome to be able to fish that far from the boat.
Cheers and keep up the good work. Your 20,30,or 40 lber is headed your way, just keep chuckin !!!!!!!!
Cheers , Charlie
