I was one of those guys in the lineup on the Russian and the Gualala. I was also with Bill on his last trip to the Keys the summer before he passed. Frankie B hosted me that trip and got me my first Tarpon. I worked with the Cardiologist that did Bill's angioplasty whom he credited with "saving his life". But that is not how we met. It was a Christmas morning below Neely that I hooked a hatchery Steelhead. I beached the fish and asked my son if he wanted to have a merry fishmas and eat this fish when this guy walks up and says they are delicious, do you mind if I cast to the spot you just caught that fish at? Sure I said as I dispatched the fish. He continiued, I've never seen a steelhead rise to a fly like that. I was watching you from over there. I bragged I just tied my first fly and that fish ate it. He looked at me and said, I don't think it was the fly. After a few minutes of small talk we discovered we shared some history in Cardiology and became great friends. I loved that guy and relish the lessons he, Bob Nauheim and Frankie Bertaina, shared with me. Thank you for answering my question. It was the gentlemanly thing to do. I look forward to your email. PS if you are ever in the lower keys give me a shout.
