|I agree, Long Island is a great place, and has a lot of DIY fishing opportunities. I have also been there 3 times. Two books that I found helpful were the Explorer Chartbooks - http://explorercharts.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=18&category_id=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=54 - and the Bahamas Fly Fishing Guide - http://www.bahamasflyfishingguide.com/ - Between the two you can sleuth out a lot of potential flats on the island. |
Stella Maris is on the North end of the island and you can easily fish the flats up there on foot. If you have a car, venture south and there are a lot of flats around Deadman's Cay, and a stop at Max's Conch Shack for a Kalik and Conch Salad is worth the drive just for the local flavor. Down at the South end of the island there are a couple of inlets that fan out into large shallow bays that you can drive to. We found the bottom to be soft in these areas, but there were quite a few bonefish.
We split time between DIY and guided days when we were there. Hiring a guide is definitely worth it. Not only will they help you have a great day when you fish with them, but most of them are happy to share intel for DIY access too.
