For fly fishing… yes, but I saw it being used by gear guys for steelhead over 30 years ago. Its' application in fly fishing would seem to be limited to smaller fish and lighter lines. Can you imagine trying to land a Tarpon that way, much less casting a heavier weight line without a reel to help counter balance it? For lighter lines it would be like Tenkara on steroids by eliminating the fixed length limitation… but then part of the beauty of Tenkara is suppose to be the simplicity.
