I'm far from being a Tarpon expert, I only did the Tarpon thing for about 12 years, however some years I went twice, when I finally hooked up with a good guide out of Marathon named Scott Collins, He had a very small light profile boat (a dolphin I think) He wouldn't think of putting a "egg beater" on it, everything was about low profile and stealth. Sometimes if a large string got past us, we would fire up the big motor and go in a large ark then set up again, we would never chase with a motor, however after that being said we would pole right along side of a large pack and get shot after shot till we hooked up.

This same guide, also won three major tournaments in the same year, beating out the best in the World, so whatever method he used, he did know what worked best and he proved it. I don't think Tarpon skiffs need an egg beater either.
my 2 cents.
