|we just return from 6 days of flats fishing on Crooked Island. First off let me say what super place Crooked Island Lodge is. The staff was awesome, friendly and fun. The guides are as good as anywhere we have fished. They were fun, good teachers and enjoyable to share a a boat with. |
The weather was a little tough—20 to 25 for 5 days—but the flats were so huge you could could wade down wind as long as the tide let you. We fished bones in 8 inches of water wading and in calf deep water, and in the mangroves creek mouths by boat. The bonefish were bigger on average than i expected—3 to 4 pounds. Sarah had several fish at 6 pounds and another couple had a couple of 8 pound fish. Sarah and i permit fished fro a total of 3 hours and saw 13 permit. The smallest one was around 20 pounds and most were in the upper 20s and mid 30s and bigger! While were there we met a great guy who was all about the permit. During our week he hooked three and landed a 25 pound fish our last day. I just got an e-mail from his daughter and he caught another 20 pound fish today!
We fished the Sage Method-7, 8 and 9 wts. The last day the winds were under 20 and the 7 wt was a gem.
The flats are measured in square miles and have little of no pressure.
Crooked Island withdrawal is wicked—already planing another trip back in 2014
