It is a prickly tempered, kick-ass frog that lives up to Max's reputation. Lots of frogs inhabit cave entrances, but the guys we found were nearly a km deep inside a heavily bat infested cave. The bat urine and guano created an ammonia filled atmosphere that was nearly impossible to breath in. Frogs are highly susceptible to toxins permeating their skin, but these frogs thrived in the caustic environment. We caught one specimen that coughed up a bat. Like Max it clearly thought outside the box!
It appears to be closely related to a cave-dwelling frog that lives down in the Bismarck Archipelago. The specimens are being held in the herpetology wing of the University at Port Moresby. PNG time is in a warp, so no holding our collective breaths waiting for a definitive ID, but incorporating Garth in its name was a no brainer.
