Hello Matt,
You will get many suggestions regarding the flies to use. Most of the suggestions might be based on success that the person is having, so mine. Check out my posts over the past months.
For the past many years I have found that "Clouser like" flies produce year around in the Delta. For the past two or three years I have been tuning the Stay Hungry Streamer iteration to the point that it seems to produce consistently. I have been finding that adding an additional amount of Flash Tail(thanks Dan) to the Umpqua offered Stay Hungry design helps.
As far as colors go, Lefty has said it in the past, "If it ain't Chartreuse it ain't no use". The next combination of colors would be what Umpqua calls Perch.. We call it Bluegill. Third would be gray /white
Because my brother-in-law is left handed we are able to cover similar water many times using the same or similar fly. I feel that the retrieval cadence length and pause times must be adjusted for the day or hour or location that we are fishing. We most often try to not duplicate our stripping until we find one method that is working better than the other.
Tight Lines,
Bob
