Unfortunately, the jury is still out on this, although the banning of these jigs is a necessary step in the right direction. To get the full flavor of what's going on in Boca Grande, I suggest you have a look at Save the Tarpon's website(Savethetarpon.com). These folks undertook to fight the Professional Tarpon tournament people, including calling for a boycott of sponsors and action by the FWC. For their trouble, the directors of the organization were sued for damages individually by PTTS , among others(see the account of that on the Save the Tarpon website). A fuller account of the FWC vote and its consequences, and the PTTS reaction appears at http://savethetarpon.com/fwc-votes-to-ban-controversial-tarpon-jig-in-boca-grande-pass/ . You will see that the battle to protect megalops atlanticus in Florida waters is likely far from over. But today's news is certainly encouraging, and it remains to be seen what next year's PTTS tournament will bring.Stay tuned.
