I'll be trying them for the first time next month on the Tsiu River in SE Alaska. A friend handed me a "Spanker" fly a few years ago when we were having a 20+ fish day on a small coastal stream near Yakutat. The fish were bright and hot, right out of the salt and holding in pods in clear water thigh to hip deep. Gliding the Spanker over the top of a pod would cause an individual with an independent streak to separate from the group and follow the fly to finally gulp it. What a rush! And yes, the popper head on the Miyawaki is mounted point forward to produce a wake rather than a pop.
