I had an Outback from 1998-2008. I swapped it out for a Toyota RAV4 FWD (V6) b/c of the Outback's head gasket rumor... I think I had put 160K on the Outback when I dumped it.

I towed my 15' Lowe Angler 150S quite a bit, which, by my estimation, packaged up to about 1200 to 1300 lbs. I could hardly tell I was pulling the boat until I got to, say, Altamont Pass. No issues with my brakes.

Overall, I really liked the car, but I didn't want to shell out the dough for a new head gasket.

Other than launch ramps in the SF Bay, the Delta, San Luis Res etc, I don't do too much to test out the traction of my current tow vehicle (RAV4), but so far, the FWD hasn't had any trouble.

I got the RAV4 with the tow prep package, which brings the capacity to 3500 lbs, in anticipation of buying a bigger boat... so far, I'm still running the 15-footer, with no new boat in sight.

Good luck car shopping.
