I purchased a new 2010 Outback..........
The Good: Mileage Highway speeds = 32-33+MPG. Towing a G3 boat about 2,000 pounds on mostly flat ground = 16 to 17MPG.
The Not So Good: At about 1,500 miles the front breaks started banging when they were applied when backing up. In addition they bang the first time they are applied going forward. The dealer did stop this problem (for about 300 miles)and to this date they still bang.
The next problem also persists even to this day. When the car is brought to a stop the engine will "stutter" RPM often dropping to 450RPM. Not too much of a problem now that the car has over 60,000 miles on it and I do not expect to have the ability to move away from a stop without this random thing happening. At about 1,500 miles I nearly got "T-Boned" as the engine stuttered as I moved into incoming traffic.
The problem I have is neither the local dealer or corporate cured these problems after several attempts to have them fixed. Letters to both were not handled. I want to let you know that this is the normal operating procedure that many customers have reported. Will I ever purchase another Subaru? Not Likely!
